Djibouti Reptiles



The fauna of Djibouti can be categorized into Djibouti mammals, Djibouti birds and Djibouti reptiles. Reptiles are usually tetrapod animals. Crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtles are categorized into this group of reptiles. The different types of Djibouti reptiles are:

  • Nile crocodile
  • Sand Snake
  • Puff Adder Snake
  • Chameleons

In Djibouti, Nile crocodile can be can be found in the North of Lac Abbe which is close to the Ethiopian border. The color of the skin of the Nile crocodile varies from drab green or brownish to a blackish tone on the dorsal side. The ventral side has a lighter tone. One of the unique characteristic of this reptile of Djibouti is that it does not shed its skin like other replies.

Sand snake is usually found in the Djibouti-city farming area of Ambouli. This snake is active during the day time and is not dangerous and harmful to human beings.

Puff Adder snake on the other hand is a dangerous animal. Its chief habitat is water. The bite of the Adder snake can cause excessive bleeding which in turn can cause death. It is one of the feared reptiles in Djibouti and allover Africa.

Chameleons of different types also abound in Djibouti.
