Fauna in Comoros

The Rain forests and the mangrove forests along the coast of Comoros and the forests of the Mount Karthala on Grande Comore, Mount Ntringui on Anjouan, and Mount Koukoule on Moheli abounds in Comoros Fauna. Diversity in Comoros Fauna can be found here, some of which are strictly endemic to the place. Eight species of native terrestrial mammals, which are found here, include:

  • 3 species of fruit bats
  • 3 insectivorous bat species
  • 2 species of lemurs.
  • 25 species of terrestrial reptiles
  • 2 species of sea turtle, including green turtle

Out of these animals, some of the species of mammals, which are common to the place, are:




  • 2 species of fruit bats (Pteropus livingstonii and Rousettus obliviosus) the mongoose lemur (Eulemur mongoz, VU)
  • 9 species of reptiles are strict endemics. Endemics include 2 species of day geckos (Phelsuma spp.), 4 species of shinning-skink (Cryptoblepharus spp.), and 2 species of chameleon (Furcifer sp.)
  • Common Lepidopterans include 2 species of swallowtail butterflies Papilio aristophontes and Graphium levassori

Diversity of amphibians is rather low and none of them are commonly found in Comoros. Comoros also has a variety of avifauna. Certain birds are easily found in the region while some are found in a particular island of Comoros. These birds include:


  • Grand Comoro Drongo
  • Mount Karthala White-eye
  • Anjouan sunbird
  • Bronze Mannikin
  • Anjouan brush-warbler
  • Mayotte Scops-owl

The habitats of the Fauna of Comoros are endangered because of natural calamities as well as human intervention. So to protect the fauna in Comoros, various conservation projects have been undertaken by the Comoros Government.

Birds in Comoros

The rain forests and mangrove forests sprawling along the coasts of Comoros are the habitats of the various Comoros Birds. Certain Comoros birds are endemic to Comoros while some are even endemic to a certain island in Comoros.
