The O’Higgins region in Chile is one of the seventh administrative regions from north to south. It is named after Bernardo O’ Higgins Reiquelme, a famous South American independence leader. The capital of this region is Rancagua. The three main provinces of O’Higgins region are Cachapoal, Colchagua and Cardenal Caro.

Rancagua the capital city of O’Higgins region is a historical city. The cathedral in the city houses the seat of arms which is also called the seat of Heroes. This has a special historical significance as this was the place where General O’Higgins maintained his army and artilleries during the War of Independence. There is a museum in the city which contains exhibits of historical significance. La River is a city in the Province of Cachapoal of the O’Higgins region. It is a beautiful city with spectacular tourist attractions.

The Cardenal Caro province of O’Higgins is the only province with its exit to the sea. The capital city of this province is Pichilemu. Pichilemu is known as the ‘bath tourist city’ of Chile. The city has enough water even during the summer months. The name ‘Pichilemu’ means small forest.

The Colchagua province of the O’Higgins region in Chile is flanked in the north by Santiago, on the south by Curico Province, in the west by the Pacific Ocean and Argentina in the east. This is mainly an agricultural province of the O’Higgins region. The Colchagua Province is also the winer route of Chile. Several vineyards in this region are the source of some the the world’s best wines. Cattle and mining is also given equal importance in this region. It has an area of 9,983 sq km. The river Rapel flows through this region. The main tributary of this river, Cachapoal is famous for the numerous thermal baths. The main towns in this region are San Fernando, Santa Cruz and Palmilla. San Fernando is the provincial capital of this region. It is situalted in the fertile valley of the Rapel River. San Fernando is well connected to the other main cities in Chile, through the Pan American Highway and also by rail.

The O’Higgins region of Chile has a variety of tourist attractions, to entice the leisure tourists to visit this fascinating country again and again.
