Hermann Moll

Hermann Moll was one of the most famous cartographers or geographers of the world. He was born in the year 1654, at a time of geographical discoveries, Anglo-Dutch wars, the rise of North America and New Netherlands and the Renaissance. Even the rise of the House of Stuarts and William of Orange occurred during the time when the cartographer was living. However, no information is available regarding his native land.

Hermann Moll was the contemporary of Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, Robert Hooke and Christian Huygens. He made many valuable contributions in the field of cartography. According to his map of Newfoundland, the territory was situated in the southern tip of the French shore at 47’40’ North Latitude. The map was used by the French to establish their claim over Newfoundland.
