“Distrito Federal” or ‘Federal District’ is the single Brazilian district containing the capital city of Brasilia. Set apart from Brasilia, the Federal District in Brazil is surrounded by the state of Goias.

“Distrito Federal” began functioning officially when the Government was shifted to the region on 21st April 1960. At that point, it got detached totally from the twin states of Minas Gerais and Goias. Prior to the separation, “Distrito Federal” happened to the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. These are the two primary functions of Brazilian Federal District, worth mentioning.

In the pat, a major part of the “Distrito Federal” population was composed of local workers and labors called “Candangos”, on whom the credit of building the capital city rested. The remaining population consisted mainly of government employees, who were shifted to Brasilia immediately after the completion of its construction. At present, the Federal District in Brazil is a fully planned urban region with special areas for educational institutions, commercial centers and residential buildings. The Federal District roads and lanes are anonymous, yet well recognized through the numbers and letters arranged geographically for popular convenience. The total population of the region had outnumbered long before, compared to the available one million living spaces. However, owing to the recent complications in organization, the overall growth and development of the district has slackened down considerably.

Covering a total area of 5,802 km², Brazilian Federal District shares the same Brazilian National Flag as its national emblem. About 2,383,784 people reside here, with 353.5 persons living every km² land area. Despite not being a complete state, the typical traits of a state which “Distrito Federal” possesses, offers it more or less similar identity of a matured state.
