The Monastery of Varagavank

Earlier this Armenia monastery was known as Yedi Kilise .The monastery is situated on the slopes of Mt. Varag which is now known as Erek Dagi. This monastery was founded by King Senekerim Hovhannes of Vaspurakan.

There is a long story behind the formation of this monastery. Two saints Gayane and Hrip’sime had got a piece of the True Cross .They bought it to van. It is said that they lost the cross and it was only after four century that it was discovered by a monk on the Varag Mountain. The monk took the cross to the heritage and from then it became Varagavank monastery.

This Armenia monastery was enlarged by King Senekerim . He did this to give this monastery a better look and today it stands as the one of the main Armenia Monasteries. Later it was taken to Sivas where it was kept in another Armenian monastery of Surp Nishan.

When Senekerim died the cross was bought back to the Varagavank. The Monastery of Varagavank earned a lot of fame during the 17 th and 18 th century. Finally Turkish army destroyed Varagavank in 1915.
