From the time Zimbabwe obtained its independence, Zimbabwe Elections plays an important role all the important decisions within the government were decided by elections held from time to time. Zimbabwe Government still sticks to this practice.
Significant Zimbabwe Elections
There are a number of elections that have taken place in Zimbabwe and are of extreme political significance. Some of the most important historical and recent elections of Zimbabwe are explained below:-
- House of Assembly Elections –A number of important and decisive elections have taken place within the House of Assembly, the lower chamber of the Parliament. The first important lection that took place in the house of Assembly after Zimbabwe gained independence was in 1980 and then again in 1985. The most recent House of Assembly Election took place on 31st of March 2005. The total number of seats was increased to 150 from 120 in this election.
- Presidential Elections – The Presidential Elections forms important part of Zimbabwe Elections. In the Presidential election of 1990, Robert Mugabe and his party Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front, won with 2,026,976 votes and Robert Mugabe became the indisputable President of Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe managed to win majority of the votes in all the following Presidential Elections that took place in 199, 2000 and recently in 2005, and is still the President of Zimbabwe.
