Kenneth Kaunda is just like a father figure in Zambia. He was the first President of Zambia and ruled the country for 27 long years. Kenneth Kaunda assumed charge as the President of Zambia in1964. He was called the founder President of Zambia. However, his rise to the president's post was not a smooth affair. In fact, he took the mantle of the president of Zambia by virtue of movements that he initiated for the liberation of Zambia.
The movement, which was at its peak, was meant to liberate Zambia from the shackles of British colonialism. Kenneth Kaunda, at the height of this movement, played a pivotal role by leading from the front. It was this protagonist attitude that had catapulted Kenneth Kaunda to power.
After assuming office as the head of the state and being one of the vastly regarded Zambia Politicians, Kenneth Kaunda began the repairing job of Zambia, whose pride and sovereignty was at stake during the colonial era. His dream was to turn Zambia into a free, sovereign country.
Though Zambia has attained independence, the persistent slump in economy is still a big concern. Poverty is something that a poor country like Zambia is yet to get rid of. About 80% people of Zambia are still in the grip of poverty.
Kenneth Kaunda is now far away from the corridors of power and running campaigns against AIDs, after his 27 years long undisrupted single party reign in Zambia came to an end. An apparent sense of disappointment of not being able to revitalize the economy still seems to be dogging him, as was found in a recent interview aired by the BBC.
