Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a safe haven for indigenous species of birds and animals of Democratic Republic of the Congo. In the year 1980, it was declared a Natural World Heritage Site. The national park encompasses an area of 600,000 hectares of land and is located at an altitude of 600 meters to 3,308 meters.
The Kahuzi-Biega National Park of Democratic Republic of the Congo was gazetted on 30th November 1970. Earlier it covered an area of 75,000 hectares, but later it was expanded to 600,000 hectares in July 1975. The National Park is situated in the Kivu Region in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is 50km west of Bukavu town. It is very close to the Kivu Lake and the Rwandan border.
The Kahuzi-Beiga National Park of Zaire is an excellent habitat for gorillas. Other species of primates that can be seen here are Colobinae, Eastern Chimpanzee,, black and white colobus monkey, . Some other species of mammals are antelope, elephant Loxodonta africana, duiker and hog . It is also a favorite destination for bird watchers. Some of the rare species of birds that can be witnessed here are Shelley's crimson wing Cryptospiza shelleyi, Rockefeller's sunbird, Grauer's warbler and Grauer's broadbill.
