In the beginning of the 15th century, Kongo King Affonso developed relations with Portugal and Roman Catholicism was declared the state religion. A number of rulers came and ruled the kingdom in their own style and way till the 18th century and in the Conference held in Berlin from 1884 to 1885, Leopolds 11 claim to rule the kingdom of Congo was accepted.

Zaire became an independent state in 1960 and the Prime minister of the country Patrice Lumunba Col Josephs was dismissed by the head of the state Joseph Kasavubu.

Zaire, presently known as the Democratic Republic of Congo, still bears the influence of the colonial rule.
