Government of Zaire



The Government of Zaire operates within a republican framework with a strong presidential system. The President is the Head of the State. The executive, the legislative and the judiciary form the integral part of Zaire Government. The president acts as the sole authority. The prime minister along with his cabinet of ministers as the National Executive Council of Zaire is answerable to the President.

Zaire Presidency is determined by multi party elections held throughout the country. Joseph Kasa Vubu was the first elected president of independent Zaire. President Mobutu was famous and known for his authoritarian rule. He ruled for a long period of 32 years.

The judiciary of Zaire is organized according to the country's administrative and political format. It is base broadly on the Belgian model and also imitates the European model. The Supreme Court of Zaire is at the apex of the judicial system and is located in the capital city of Kinshasa. Three appeal courts exist just below the Supreme Court. Several regions are allocated as jurisdictions under this appeal courts. The numerous, urban, rural and sub-regional tribunals are commonly referred to as the 'courts of peace'.

The council of minister appointed by the President is the National Executive Council of Zaire. They form an integral part of the government in Zaire. The cabinet of ministers are answerable to the President who is the sole authority and all powerful in Zaire.
