Mbuji - Mayi



Mbuji-Mayi is a town in the south central Democratic Republic of the Congo or Zaire. This town was called Bakwanga until 1966. Mbuji - Mayi town is popular all over the continent for its diamond mining centers.

Mbuji - Mayi is the capital of Kasai-Oriental Region, located along the banks of Bushimaie River. It is one of the Zaire's largest urban areas with the busiest commercial center, trading world's majority diamonds. Here most of the industrial diamonds are produced, the quality and quantity both are unmatched. This diamond mining was founded by the European communities in the Belgian Congo after 1910.

This town of Mbuji – Mayi is said to belong to the Luba country. The main occupation of the people residing in this place is diamond mining. Much of African wealth is accumulated in this region. Ever since the Congo attained independence in 1960, the city's population showed a rapid growth. There were innumerable immigrants from Luba and other parts of the country to Mbuji - Mayi. The population of Mbuji – Mayi in Zaire was estimated to be 613,027 in 1991. From the period of 1960 to 1962 this town was the capital of the Mining State of South Kasai (Kasai-Oriental province).

Mbuji - Mayi contributes largely to the economy of Zaire and the entire continent. Commercially it is a vital region in Zaire and employs large number of workforce.
