Socotra is a picturesque island in Yemen. It lies in the Indian Ocean and is situated just at the entrance of the Gulf of Aden. It is said that the island is located approximately 340 km away from the Yemeni mainland coast. The island covers a population of about 50,000. The name of the island is believed to have derived from the Sanskrit word, ‘dvipa sakhadara’ that can be translated as ‘Island of Bliss’.
Being located on the lap of nature, Socotra attends numerous visitors from various corners of the world. With its uniqueness and unspoiled beauty, the island allures all its visitors. In fact, tourists should definitely visit Socotra to complete the Yemen trip.
Socotra is a part of the island group, however, most of the other islands are quite small in size and the biggest of these are Al-Ikhwan and Abdu l-Kuri. The islands lie on the coral banks. There are numerous magnificent rolling mountains named Hajhir.
The population of the northern part of it is very low and comprises a restricted coastline. Socotra is also a perfect place to go for, if tourists are interested to observe the distinct species of flora. Frankincense, Myrrh and dragon's blood tree are some of them.
