The University of Virginia is probably the most prestigious university in the US and is also listed among the top 10 universities in the nation. The university owes its origins to the early days of America's independence when Thomas Jefferson had laid out the plans for the institution. Jefferson's vision was for an "academic village" replete with all the facilities that proper education should provide. Thus, it was decided to have 10 pavilions within the university, with hostel facilities and a common library that stood at the head of a shared lawn. The initial 10 pavilions were constructed for 10 different departments of study in the university. The architecture of the famous dome-shaped library of the university is inspired by Roman architecture, especially that of the Roman Pantheon.
University of Virginia specializes in subjects like Architecture, Philosophy and Astronomy and was also the pioneer in starting engineering schools in the US. Since its establishment in the year 1819, University of Virginia has not once lost its significance in US history, more so because of the important personalities associated with it. Some such historical personalities include; Walter Reed, Edgar Allan Poe, James Monroe, Bobby Kennedy, Tina Fey, Woodrow Wilson, Daniel Walters, Richard Byrd and James Madison among others. The faculty of the university is something to reckon with as there are many Nobel Laureates among them and other very learned scholars including Guggenheim, Fulbright and National Endowment for Humanities fellows. The University of Virginia continuously produces students who excel in life beyond par, often becoming successful Supreme Court judges or, other distinguished personalities.
