The Virginia State University was established in 1882 under the name of the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute. It was the first university in the nation to be fully supported by state funding. The university's name is especially significant in US history since, it holds the stature of becoming the first such higher education institution solely for African Americans. At present the university still remains as one of the 2 remaining land-grant educational institutions in the US. The most attractive factor of the campus is that it is situated on top beautiful plains, very close to the Appomattox River which flows beside the Chesterfield County in the serene hamlet of Ettrick. The closest city to the university, Washington D.C. is only 2 hours away.
The Virginia Sate University has abundant scope for in-depth agricultural research being made available to the students, through its sprawling 416 acre agricultural area. It is a huge university in itself, with no less than 50 academic buildings dedicated to imparting students, knowledge on various subjects. Although, the university does not receive as high monetary assistance as other premier universities in the city, nonetheless, it is one of the well-managed and growing universities in Virginia.
