It was in the year 1867 when the Southern Virginia University started of as Bowling Green Female Seminary. It was in 1900 when the female seminary finally acquired an individual building in the resort hotel of Buena Vista and adopted the name of Southern Seminary. The hotel in itself is a historic landmark and has acquired merit based on its heritage status. The school continued its operations as predominantly a junior college, from 1922 to 1996 until private investors decided to, strengthen the college's educational and administrative base. Thus, in 1996 with renewed investments the junior college was transformed into a 4 year liberal arts college. With drastic growth and development in the infrastructure of the college, it was provided the status of a university in 2004.
The sprawling campus of 155 acres has allowed the university to start 10 different buildings imparting education in diverse subjects. The university has also updated its residential facilities to include over 16 homes providing accommodation to hundreds of students traveling here each year for higher education. Being a new organization, the Southern Virginia University is still in the process of growth and several educational projects are still underway. The most notable factor about the university is the Knight Statue, a gift from Glade Knight, that is positioned in front of the Main Hall. The university is mostly concerned with, the education of the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who are one of the pioneers behind re-constituting the college into a full-time university.
