Like all secretaries of state working with the various state governments of the US, Virginia secretary of state is also responsible for efficiently performing many important governmental activities. The basic functions of Virginia secretary of state can be categorized under three categories. The main function of the secretary of state is related with elections that are conducted within the state. The main function related with this field includes the diligent performance of the main election official and heading the department which registers candidates for elections. The office of the secretary of state of Virginia also provides information regarding poll booths and voter registration.
Besides the very important election function, the other significant function of Virginia secretary of state is business related; wherein the secretary of state is responsible for registering all sorts of businesses within the Commonwealth of Virginia and making a note of all non-profit organizations within the state. Beside the above-stated very important functions of the secretary of state regarding elections and business, Virginia's secretary of state also performs other miscellaneous functions. Some such functions include; administering the state libraries and archives and sanctioning the issuing of automobile registration. The secretary of state of Virginia also performs the additional function of acting as an assistant to the governor of the Commonwealth and helping him in appointing persons to all government posts in Virginia.
The secretary of the Commonwealth's office staff include the executive offices, the authentications department, the department of gubernatorial appointments, department on clemency and extradition, the department on the conflict of interest, the lobbyist registration, a notary, a restoration of rights department and a department on service of process.
