The most noted open, liberal arts university amongst the private universities of Virginia, is undoubtedly, the University of Richmond. The university derives its name from its place of location, at the outskirts of the capital of the Commonwealth, Richmond within the Henrico county. The popularity of the university amongst Virginians, is because of its quality undergraduate programs although, the university has a considerable share of graduate students in its student population of 4000 and above. The Richmond University is all the more favorable to students residing outside the city or even the state because it has excellent residential facilities. Although the University of Richmond was established by the Baptists in 1830, at present it is entirely a nonsectarian entity. The university has immense contribution during the Civil War years when it served as a make-shift hospital and subsequently was transformed into barracks for union soldiers. The war had completely ravaged the educational institution and it would not be able to function if James Thomas had not helped in re-opening the institution through private donation. Admission to this prestigious university requires that all aspiring candidates complete their general education and enroll into the liberal arts program.
