The Northern Virginia Community College had been started in 1965 with the aim of allowing equal and comprehensive education to all sections of society and hence the Community College name was proposed for this Northern Virginia College. The college is most famously referred to as NOVA and is considered the Mecca of continuation studies and community service programs. Besides, the college is also synonymous with quality 2 year associate degree courses, career studies certificates and other 1 year certificate courses.
Presently with 6 college campuses and still in the process of expanding, NVCC holds the record of being the largest multi-campus college in the state and is only the second such college in the whole of US. The college ranks among 23 of those prestigious colleges that are governed by the Virginia State Board of Community Colleges.
The initial campus of the Northern Virginia Community College was started in Annandale in 1965 and it has evolved to emerge as the main campus of the college. The other campuses are located at Alexandria, Woodbridge, Manassas, Loudon and the Springfield Medical Education Campus. The process of setting up extended campuses at Arlington and Reston is still going on. Today, the total enrollment in credit courses of the university includes 63000 students, while it has 250,000 students in various non-credit courses of the college. The college has a special provision which assists meritorious students to enroll in 4 year colleges after completing their education within its premises. In order to allow long-distance students to benefit through its system of education, the college has started special distance education program.
