All Virginia hospitals work under the administration of the Virginia Department of Health although they have individual functioning bodies. The Health Department of Virginia devises programs and procedures to implement health standards within the state which should be followed by different hospitals and primary nursing centers. Most hospitals in Virginia are private profit earning organizations and function on their own but it is necessary for them to implement all the health and hygiene standards that have been introduced by the health department.
However, Virginia hospitals have formed a separate organization for themselves called the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association which has 48 hospital systems, rehabilitation centers and specialty hospitals as its members. Although all these members are private, profit seeking organizations, they have entered into a joint venture only to promote the health standards within the state. It is the duty of this organization to ensure that all its members from all parts of Virginia, grant fair treatment to all their patients irrespective of caste and creed. This association was established 1926 and ever since, has honestly served its duty of health awareness and promotion among Virginians through its members.
There are a number of prestigious and trustworthy Virginia hospitals serving different healthcare units of the Commonwealth, some of the more famous names are; Riverside Regional Medical Center, Atlanta VAMC Home, Houston VAMC Home, Philadelphia Medical Center, St Mary's hospital of Richmond, Children's Hospital, Richmond, Oklahoma City VA Medical Center, Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington and Rockingham Memorial Hospital. A very prestigious and one of the oldest hospitals in the US is the Mason Hospital Virginia which was established in 1920, however, it should not be concluded from the name that the hospital is situated in Virginia. It is a private, non-profit hospital in Seattle, which was named Virginia Mason after the name of the daughters of its founders.
The oldest and most prestigious of Virginia hospitals is the Center Hospital Virginia which was established in 1933 and began as the Arlington Hospital. From a 100 bed dingy facility in 1944, it has today grown into a 334 bed, 530,000 square foot area healthcare facility which provides services to patients from all parts of the Commonwealth.
