The Virginia Department of Education is also responsible for administering the working and schedules of any high school in Virginia. All high schools in Virginia are ultimately answerable to the Virginia Department of Education for school statistics. A good high school diploma in Virginia is extremely essential for enrollment into any of the premier colleges, universities or vocational educational institutions in Virginia. These days, the government of the Commonwealth of Virginia has made it mandatory for post-secondary students to possess a good high school diploma in order to enroll into a graduation program.
High school students in Virginia, therefore have the option of, selecting any graduation requirement program while in their last year of secondary education. Some such diploma programs are; Standard diploma, Advanced studies diploma, Modified standard diploma, Student transfers and other diplomas. For a standard diploma, the high school student needs to pass out with 22 standard units of credit in compulsory and elective subjects. The advanced diploma requires students to earn 24 such units of credit, whereas the modified standard diploma is meant especially for disabled students. Other diplomas include special diploma, the certificate of program completion, general achievement diploma and the general education development programs. Students in Virginia can gain admission into any high school in the state only in the 9th standard or at the beginning of the 10th standard only after he/she qualifies in the standard diploma program.
