The United Arab Emirates Judiciary is one of the important pillar of the Federation's government. The function of United Arab Emirates Judiciary is immensely significant in controlling the law and order of the Federation.
United Arab Emirates Federal Judiciary enjoys complete independence as guaranteed by the Constitution. The 2 main components of United Arab Emirates Judiciary are the Courts of First Instance and the Federal Supreme Court.
The Federal Supreme Court of UAE comprises a president and 5 judges, who are appointed by the Supreme Council of Rulers. All the member judges and president of the Supreme Court are independent of the legislative and executive branches. They cannot be removed from office once appointed. The functions of the judges are to intercede on matters related to disputes between the emirates and the Federal Government and inter-emirate disagreements. They also determine the constitutional significance of federal laws.
In 1978 the lower courts of UAE were integrated into the federal judiciary to form a unified system with four tribunals.
Emirates of Dubai as well as Ra's-al-Khaimah have court systems, which are independent of the federal system. There are multiple levels of appeal in each system and the verdicts of capital cases can be appealed to the president.
The United Arab Emirates Judiciary functions in accordance with the Constitution of the Federation.
