Togo History

The Togo History dates back to pre-Portuguese invasion but unfortunately too little is known about the world that was mostly inhabited by tribal groups. The earliest known people include the Voltaics and the Kwa people. The Voltaic people today inhabit the southwest region and the northern part of Togoland. The various Voltaic people in the region include the Konkomba, Natimba, Logba, Dye, Tambermat, Kabre,Lamba, Moba, Losso, and Basari. The Kposo, Adele and the Adele are some of the sub groups of the Kwa people in the Togo Region.

In the 14th century the Ewe people added to the native population of the area and the latest infiltration among the Africans were made by the Ane. The underdevelopment in the region compared to the European nations made the tribal people subject to the evil practice of slavery. Slave acquisition from the Togo region was introduced in the 15th century. This is the time when the Portuguese were voyaging overseas to discover new sea routes and destinations. The slave trade became so popular in the Togo region that Togo and the adjoining places were collectively called 'the slave coast'.

After a brief period of Danish dominance in the region, Togoland came to be partially controlled by Germany in 1884 until after the first world war when the power was divided between France and Great Britain. This decision was approved by the League of Nations.

It was much later in the 1960s that the Bristish Togoland was given to Ghana and the French counterpart became the Republic of Togo. Today after much struggle and power swapping, Togo is a democratic nation that is among the many developing nations of Africa.
