The Serengeti National Park is one of the largest national parks in Tanzania as well as in the world. The variety of wildlife that is present in Serengeti National Park is enormous. Serengeti in local Maasai language means, an 'extended place'. Serengeti National Park is extended over an area of 12,950 square kilometers. The national park is located amidst the most beautiful landscape features with Lake Victoria in the west, Great Rift Valley in the east and Lake Eyasi in the south.
The landscape features in Serengeti National Park ranges from open grasslands to wooded grasslands, from plains to small meandering rivers. Usually with a dry and warm climate wildlife thrives very well in Serengeti National Park. There are short spells of rain from March to May, after which the weather remains almost dry. Migration of various animals is seen on large scale in the dry season in search of water.
The national park is the home of several endangered species. There are abundant wild animals like lions, hyena, hunting dogs, cheetahs, zebras, rhinos, hippos, wildebeests and gazelles in Serengeti National Park. Many varieties of colorful birds like starlings, lilac-breasted rollers, ring-necked doves and barbets are also found in the park and they also migrate to other places during the winter. Serengeti National Park has also become a favorite destination of researchers and scientists apart from a large number of tourists.
