The society of Slovakia is made up of the
Slovakia people who are the decedents of the
Slavic people who inhabited the Danube river basin in 6th and 7th centuries B.C. The Slovaks are traditionally people of the soil and even in the modern era they are closely related to soil. Thus today also most of the Slovakia people are peasants.
Communism brought with it industrialization in Slovakia. This resulted in the Slovak society being an interesting combination of a rich folk culture and modernism. Changes in the political scenario in 1989 led to the broadening of social outlook of the
people of Slovakia. But the older generations are still rural and depend on agriculture. Even after the Slovakia independence the
people in Slovakia retain the rich traditions of the country.
Majority of the
Slovak people are the native inhabitants of the land, the Slavic people. But today a number of races have settled down in Slovakia. These include the Slovak Americans, Hungarians, Jews, Roma (the gypsies), Czechs, the Rutherians, Germans and the Poles.
