The currency in use in Rwanda consists of Rwanda Franc (RWF) which is divided into 100 centimes. Franc has been in use as the currency of Rwanda from 1916 after Belgium gained political control. This was followed by the replacement of German East African Rupie by the Belgian Congo Franc. Following this Rwanda used the Belgian Congo till till 1960. After this the Rwanda and Burundi Franc were in use. Rwanda currency saw its introduction in the year 1964 when Rwanda started issuing its own Franc.
Rwanda currency notes are in the denominations of RWF 5000.1000, 500 and 100. The denomination of coins is in the form of RWF 50,20, 10, 5,2 and 1. Rwanda Currency Coins replaced the 20 and 50 Franc notes in 1977.Besides, in the year 1978 a 5000 Franc note was introduced.
The coins that were introduced in 1964 were for 1, 5 and 10 Francs. Cupronickel was used for the 1 and 10 Francs while Bronze was used for the 5 Francs. Aluminum one Franc coins were introduced in in the year 1969. In 1974 again copper nickel 10 Franc coin came up. Following this in 1974 Brass 20 and 50 Franc came to be used.
