Agricultural products are the mainstay of the Paraguay industry. The industrial output of Paraguay is dependent on old economy industries like food processing and cement. There are minimal traces of high technology industries like Information Technology.
Food processing forms the crux of the Paraguay industry. Many Paraguayan citizens are employed in this sector. Factories like flour mills, oil mills, sugar mills employ a large number of people. The oil-mills extract oil from castor and cottonseed. A number of renewable oils like palm oil are processed for selling abroad. Timber is also exported in considerable quantities. Other export items include cigars, cigarettes, shoes, soap, small metal products and matches among others. The Paraguayan industry contributes more than 30% to the GDP of the country per year.
