Morocco Government



The Morocco government is a constitutional monarchy. The Kingdom of Morocco is ruled by a monarch. The monarch wields considerable executive, judicial and legislative powers. He has absolute control over the military in the North African country.

The official name of Morocco is Kingdom of Morocco. The country is known in local colloquial language as Al Maghrib. The kingdom is demarcated into 37 provinces. The legal framework of the Morocco government is based on a blend of Islamic law and the European Spanish and French system of civil law. Universal suffrage is obtained when the Moroccan individual attains 21 years of age. The King is assisted in his duties by the Prime Minister and cabinet. Elections are not held. Ministers are appointed by the monarch after legislative elections.

The legislative branch of the government consists of two houses of Parliament. The upper house is known as the Chamber of Counselors. The Chamber of Counselors has a total of 270 seats. The lower house is known as the Chamber of Representatives. The lower house has 325 seats. The Supreme Court is presided over by the Judges that are selected by the Supreme Council of the Judiciary. A number of trade unions are active in the Kingdom of Morocco.
