Mauritius Flag

Mauritius Flag was adopted after the independence of the country on 12th March, 1968. There are four horizontal stripes of equal width in the Mauritius Flag. From top to bottom, the colors of these stripes are red, blue, yellow and green. There is a civil ensign for the private vessels and a government ensign for the state vessels. These are red and blue flags, respectively. The Mauritian national flag can be seen at the canton of the private vessel and at the coat of the arms of Mauritius in case of the state vessels.

There is also a naval ensign, which is generally used by the coast guard vessels only. In this case however, the Mauritian flag consists of a rather unusual design with red, white and blue vertical stripes of unequal width. These stripes on the Mauritius Flag are further deflated by a central key or anchor symbol.

The red color of the Mauritius Flag symbolizes the struggle for independence and freedom. The blue color of the flag of Mauritius stands for the Indian Ocean, by which the country is located. The yellow color in the Mauritius National Flag is the symbol of the new light of independence, which shines over the island. The green color stands as a symbol of the agriculture of Mauritius and the spreading of the same color throughout the year in the country.

Pre-independence Mauritius Flags

The first pre-independence flag of Mauritius, which was in vogue during the years of 1906-23, consisted of the badge of 1906-68 on the right side. The background color of the flag was blue while other colors present in that flag were red and white. Although the flag containing the Mauritius Blue Ensign was initially approved on the 14th of December, 1869, it was later removed on the 14th of December, 1923.

The Mauritius Flag that was in use during the years 1869-1906 comprised the blue ensign with the old arms. This badge with the motto “stella clavisque maris indici” was approved on the 14th of December, 1869. The background of the flag was blue in color.

During the reign of the British, the Mauritius Flag was of the British Red Ensign, which was not defaced. Another variation of the Mauritian Flag was the Mauritian Red Ensign in red background, which was unofficially accepted during the years 1906-68.
