The capital of Mauritius, Port Louis is situated over the Indian Ocean. It is also the largest city of the country and one of its major ports. Port Louis in Mauritius is placed in the district of Port Louis. The population of the city is approximately around 150,000. The capital city was founded in the year 1735 by the French sailors. Then Port Louis at Mauritius served as a halt for the ships which traveled across the area of the Cape of Good Hope. The capital of Mauritius received its name from King Louis XV. Port Louis had Count Bertrand-Francois as the first Governor of the city.

During the 1600 and the 1700 centuries, the capital of Mauritius was utilized by the French and Dutch only during the months of summer, as the prevailing winds prohibited the use of the region during winter. Port Louis was declared as the center of administration and the main harbor of the country by Labourdonnais in 1735.

The Mauritian capital, Port Louis is located at an altitude of 442 feet. The latitude and longitude of the city are 20º10’S and 57º30’E respectively. The climate of the capital of Mauritius remains dry and sunny round the year. Port Louis received its status as a city in the year 1964. The city is situated at the foot of the Moka mountain range. The topography of the city features flat land with a gentle slope leaning towards the sea.
