It was until recent that the country derived political independence from the French rulers and declared itself a Republic towards the closing of the 1950s. Mauritanian economy suffered a severe setback by the droughts during 1970s and 80s. As a result, debts increased tremendously and the country was able to solve it only when oil reserve worth one billion barrels was discovered some eighty kilometers offshore in Mauritania. The discovery of oil offered immense support to the ailing national economy.

More or less half of the population in Mauritania depends on agriculture and livestock farming for earning livelihood. The agricultural products are also imported apart from human consumption. The manufacturing industries on the land include fish processing, leatherwork, jewelry, rug production and silverwork. A number of metals and precious stones like iron ore, copper, gold, diamonds etc. are also produced and exported.
