Kaedi Regional Hospital is located near the border of Senegal which is a remote sector in Mauritania. Kaedi Regional Hospital was built to provide health care facilities especially to the rural people who suffered immensely due to lack of hospitals in the rural sectors of the country. There was only a central hospital in Nouakchott. The health care of Mauritania was not up to the mark during the 80's. There were hardly any facilities during that period of time. The equipment that were available were old fashioned and rudimentary. But the conditions however changed due in the beginning of the 90's when the government of Mauritania took extreme efforts to upgrade the health department of the country. As a result of this many new hospitals, health centers came up.
Kaedi Hospital has different departments like pediatrics, surgical and ophthalmic departments, maternity and general medical unit. There is also an operation theater complex with modern equipment. There are even a laundry, kitchens, store rooms and garage to facilitate various medical activities.
Kaedi is also regarded as the largest health facility in the southern Mauritania. It is also noted for its architecture. The dome structure of the hospital adds to the beauty of the building. The structure was made in such a way that the hospital remains cool even with the light coming from outdoors. The hospital is not only famous for the medical services but the architectural genius. The hospital won Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995.
