Mauritania Election were last held in June 2007 in the form of the Presidential Elections. Formerly, Mauritania was a state dominated by a single party, namely, the Democratic and the Social Republican Party. After 2005, other political parties started coming to the forefront with the net result that there are at least eight parties now, which are in a constant quest to come in power. Presently the Democratic and the Social Republican Party has gained power in the Mauritania Election of 2007.
Mauritania Election is held on a national level where selection are made for the Head of the Nation or the President and a Legislature is also elected. Before 2006, the presidents were selected through the elections at Mauritania to complete a term of six years. This however has been reduced to a term of five years following the constitutional referendum of June 2006. A two term limit has also been introduced and the age limit of the contestants for the presidential elections of Mauritania is 75 years.
The parliament is divided into two chambers. The eighty-one National Assembly or the Al Jamiya al-Wataniyah members are selected via the elections in Mauritania. They are selected by the Mauritania Election for a term period of five tears. The Senate is the other chamber of the parliament whose 53 members get selected by the Mauritania Election for a span of six years.
