Malta Rugby Team is rather among the more popular teams in Malta. The Malta Rugby team is under the association called MRFU or Malta Rugby Football Union. Malta has not yet qualified for the Rugby World Cup but the popularity of this game is ever increasing. Malta National Rugby Team played their first match in 2000. It was November 18th when they first experienced the thrill of an international encounter in Chisinau. Their opponent was Moldova, a team considered as a much better opponent in the game of Rugby.
But it was perhaps an experience they wouldn't really like to remember. They lost the match to Moldova and what made their defeat even more agonizing was the result. It was 8-58 against them. But the team got back well in the later years and left a good mark on the European level. Their best victory was against Hungary on twenty-second May, 2004. They won the match with a margin of 35-27.
The team is called "The Knights". Malta is ranked nineteenth in the RLIF ranking. The Malta Rugby team's national jersey has two colors-red and white. In the year 2007, Malta played in the 2007 Rugby European qualifiers and was grouped in Pool B. They finished third in the group and played, play-off matches against Denmark, Andorra and Sweden. They played well in the play-offs but as only one team was to be selected from the Pool, Germany, being the group leader went for the next round. The most experienced player in the team is Steven Azzopardi. Many Maltese players are now playing successfully in NRL There is a rugby league in Malta and the authorities are happy to see fresh and young talents are coming up to enrich the Malta Rugby team.
