Malta Cricket is not the most popular form of games. But certainly, it is one of the most growing games in Malta. The history of cricket in Malta is not so old. The country has started showing interest in this game only in recent years. But this is not anything unusual. Except England, most of the countries in Europe are more interested in Rugby or Football. Cricket is a new form of game to them.
But we can surely say that in respect of many other countries in Europe, Malta Cricket is improving relatively fast. It is mandatory to get an affiliation from the International Cricket Council in order to play this game in the international level. Malta Cricket Association became a registered member of ICC in 1998.
Malta Cricket started showing their talents right after the year of their affiliation. They were playing a good game consistently and since 1999, they were a successful participant in the European Affiliated Championship. They showed their classes even prior to 1996 when they participated and put up an average show in the European nations Cup in 1997. They will also participate in the 2007 European Championship. The domestic format of this game in Malta is pretty good.
The youth teams as well as the senior teams practice hard all the year and always invite the foreign teams to come and play against their team. It helps them to learn more about their faults. Cricket in Malta is played chiefly in the winter. The only stadium in this country is called the Marsa Cricket Ground. The current skipper of the senior team is Michael Caruana who is hopeful about growing bigger and become a strong team in European cricket.
