Language in Malta



The language in Malta that is most widely used is Maltese. Maltese is basically a Semitic language that has evolved from some of the very early Semitic languages that were spoken by the Assyrians and the Babylonians. The language spoken in Malta shows considerable amount of Arabic influence and even those that were used by the different countries under whose rule Malta had been.

However, Maltese the language in Malta is written with Latin alphabets. However, there has been the addition of certain other characters in the written script of Maltese besides Latin. There is altogether the presence of 30 letters in the Maltese language. The grammar of the Maltese language is very similar to that used in Arabic. Besides, patterns of Anglo Saxon language are also found to be used in Malta. Apart from this, Maltese language has a lot of words and style borrowed from Italian, English, and Sicilian.

Maltese began to be used as the official language of Malta from the year 1936. There is the presence today of as many as 500,000 Maltese speakers most of whom are concentrated in Malta. Besides, Maltese language is also found to be spoken in other countries like Australia, United States, Canada and Gibraltar.

Besides Maltese, the other languages that are widely used in Malta include English and Italian. Italian as a language in Malta has gained popularity especially among the younger generation due to the television shows of Italy that is watched by the Maltese people.
