Malta has the presence of a well developed health care system that aims at providing the residents of Malta with quality health care service. There are a number of Malta hospitals that are both private and public in nature. Besides providing basic health care facilities Malta hospitals are also engaged in offering specialized medical services.
The Ministry of health has the responsibility to see to the running of health services in Malta. Services at Malta hospitals can also be availed by EU citizens who possess European Health insurance Card. This also includes emergency medical service. The specialized services that are offered by Malta hospitals include departments like psychiatry, opthalmology, gynecology, dentistry. Paramedical services that are offered by Malta hospitals consist of nursing, pharmacy, radiography, physiotherapy. Also, to ensure the presence of better health conditions in Malta, preventive medical checks like immunization, baby clinics, weight control clinics are present.
Of the many Malta hospitals that are present, the most noted one is St. Luke's at Guardamangia. Construction of this Malta hospital started sometime around the early 1930's. By the year 1937 major sections of the hospital were complete and following this gradually more departments were added to the hospital like the children's ward, X-Ray department, maternity department, surgical department, orthopedic division and dental care. The year 1953 saw the opening of the bacteriological department.
Some of the other hospitals that are present in Malta include Gozo General hospital, Mount Carmel hospital, Zammit Clapp hospital, St. Philip's hospital.
