The President of Malta is Edward Fenech Adami. The President of Malta is elected through popular votes. The House of Representatives elect the president and he serves office for five years tenure. The president of Malta appoints the cabinet members of the Malta parliament with the advice of the Prime Minister of Malta. In the year 1960, he became an active member of the Christian Democratic Nationalist Party and proved himself to be an efficient official. In Malta, the president is also the chief of the state.
There are certain rules in the Constitution of Malta regarding the post of Malta President. A person cannot be appointed as the President of Malta, if he has previously held the post of chief justice or judge or is not a permanent denizen of the country and many more. The functions of the president are performed by the prime minister of the country during his absence with the help of the Opposition leader. Though the executive power lies with the prime minister of the country but the President of Malta acts as the constitutional head.
The office of the Maltese President officially gained recognition in the year 1974, 13th December. During that time Malta came under the label of Commonwealth Republic. Formerly, Queen Elizabeth was the head of the country. Sir Anthony Mamo was the last Governer-General of Malta who later on became the first Malta President. Late Agatha Barbara was the first women president of Malta.
Till 1988, the President of Malta had no flag of its own. In the same year, a new flag for the Maltese President was introduced with the conventional Maltese cross. Anton Buttigeig, Vincent Tabone, Ugo Mifsud Bonnici had served the country as the Presidents of Malta. The office of the president of Malta is located in the Palace, Valletta. The secretary of the present Malta President is Anthony Attard.
