Mali industries are mostly based on processing of farm products, production of consumer goods and construction work. Mali being an agricultural country, industries in this country are primarily based on agricultural products. Tobacco industry, food processing, textile industry and meat packaging are the major agrarian and livestock-based industries in Mali.
Mining is another important industry in Mali. Gold, salt, limestone and phosphate are the major minerals found in the country. There are large deposits of iron ore, lithium, uranium, tin, diamonds and copper in the country. Mali industries comprise 21% of the total GDP. Before 1992, lack of infrastructure and corruption within the government discouraged foreign investment in the industrial sector. But once the Traore military administration went out of power in 1991, revised industrial policies were made in Mali that facilitated the growth of industries in the country. At present the Government of Mali has the power to control twenty percent stake of the investment sector and charge loyalties amounting to six percent of total loyalty earnings. The Government also gets 35% of the total profit earned from taxes.
The construction industry in Mali comprises mainly of repairing of machinery, manufacture of motorcycles and assembling of radios. Handicraft industry in Mali is also not lagging behind. Wood carvings, baskets, shoes and pottery are the main products of the handicraft industry.
Industrial contribution to the GDP of Mali is growing at the rate of 3% on an annual average basis.
