Mali Museums reminds the tourist about the glorious past of the country of Mali. The National Museum of Mali is one of the magnificent and largest museums of Mali. This spectacular building is situated in the capital city of Bamako. This spectacular building boasts of 6,000 objects that include 150 instruments and accessories, 274 audio cassettes and 121 hours of video recordings that are visible through a website. History of National Museum of Mali

The history of the National Museum of Mali dates back to the colonial period. The Museum of Mali is associated to the IFAN (French Institute for Black Africa). This institution was developed under the authorization of Dakar in the year 1936 for improving the research works in the colonial districts. The local branch of IFAN was opened in French occupied Sudan in the year 1951, which in turn laid the foundation of the National Museum. Earlier the building was known as the Sudanese Museum of the IFAN. Today the Museum building remains as one of the biggest evidences of the conventional architectural forms.

Facts about National Museum of Mali

The National Museum of Mali is considered to be a piece of superb architectural glory. The museum houses 6,000 pieces of objects, a photographic collection that includes 12,000 slides, 40,000 black and white prints, a tape collection of 300 video cassettes and 500 audio cassettes, out of which 15 are documentaries. The majority of the musical instruments in the Museum have been assembled from the Musical Heritage Study and Collection Project that continued for five years. The National Museum of Mali conducted this project in collaboration with the International Institute for Traditional Music in Berlin.
