Mali literature forms an integral part of the culture and tradition of the people of Mali. The literature of Mali is rich and diverse in creativity and heritage. Among all literary forms, poetry and novel has played a major role in increasing the worldwide popularity of Malian literature. History of Mali Literature
The history of Mali literature shows a deep influence of French culture and literature. During the second half of the 19th century Mali literature became highly developed with numerous well-known writers. Amadou Hampate Ba was one of the famous authors in Mali who became popular for his Peuhle poetry. Some other well known poets of Mali who translated the Malinke proverbs into French are Ibrahima Mamadou Ouane and Fily Dabo Sissoko. La Passion de Djime published in 1955 is considered to be the first novel of Malian literature. During the 1960's Mali got two renowned authors namely Yambo Ouologuem and Seydou Badian. Yambo Ouologuem even won the Renaudot Award in the year 1969. Some other popular writers are Modibo Keita, Moussa Konate and Doumbi Fakoly. With the passage of time, women writers gained great prominence in Malian literature.
Women Writers of Mali Literature
In the year 1994 several women writers made their presence felt in the world of Malian literature. Some of the famous literary works of Mali are Marriage, Kouthy, Dakan and Serie Noire. All these works are written by well known female writers of Mali. Aicha Fofana wrote an interesting novel named 'Marriage' in the year 1994, which became world famous. Aoua Keita's autobiography is worth mentioning, as it gave information regarding women's role in political scenario and their condition during the colonial period.
