Malawi Computers and Internet



Malawi computers and internet accession is very poor. Malawi still ranks among the worlds under developed countries. Hence the total telecommunication system is very poor in Malawi. The new government has reformed Malawi computers and internet accessing system. The previous government with its leader called Banda did not work to enhance this communication system but the new government led by the United Democratic Front is endeavoring to enhance the system, which could help people.

The government is formulating new policies and implementing them to reform the IT system. The policy would attempt to eliminate the disparity between the urban and rural networking systems. There is an autonomous authority regulating the policies for development of infrastructure. This authority was established with a view to enable Malawi to climb up the stairs in terms of Internet systems and communication systems as a whole thus improving the state of Malawi computers and internet.

The Malawi Net Limited is a leading Internet service provider. It offers web-hosting and runs internet cafés in Blantyre. It provides a link to Malawian travel websites and educational web sites.

Malawi SDNP, which is the Sustainable Development Program, provides Internet services in Malawi. This is a program funded by the UNDP and executed by the National Research Council of Malawi to assist the government, to build up an awareness regarding the IT program. It also offers training in e-mailing and web hosting. With this service a subscriber may get enrolled as an e-mail user. Using the WEBMAIL they can access mails from anywhere in the world. The cost of subscribing as an email user is something equivalent to $10.

The full Internet service is also available for the net surfers. Users can get dial -up, broadband connections. The charges for the dial up Internet connection for postpaid are:
  • First 10 hours is $20
  • Another 20 hours is $1.75
  • From 30-100 hours it is $1.50/hr
  • Above 100 it is free
