Macedonia political parties play active role in the politics of Macedonia. Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity and Socialist Party of Macedonia are some of the renowned political parties in Macedonia.
Social Democratic Union of Macedonia succeeded its previous party in power-- League of Communist of Macedonia in 1998. This political party is also a member of Socialist International. This party has remained in power in Macedonia, from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2002 to 2006. Social Democratic Union of Macedonia is also known as SDSM.
Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity is a political party of right wing. The name of the party has been influenced by Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization. This party has won 45 seats in the Legislative Elections of 2006. Under Nikola Gruevski, the then leader of the political party, a coalition government.
Socialist Party of Macedonia is another important name among Macedonia political parties. It has transformed from Socialist Alliance of Working People. Its founding assembly was held in 1990 in Skopje. For some time, it shared the name of Socialist Alliance-Socialist Party. This party was concerned about achieving democracy and sovereignty of Macedonia.
