Skopje Fortress "Kale" is one of the most attractive sites of Macedonia. It has a major historical significance and is highly popular among the local people. During the 6th century Byzantines constructed this fortress. The main material used in this construction was stone wall, that was thought to be taken from the nearby destroyed city of Skupi.
Since its establishment this historical place of Macedonia underwent several changes. Many of the conquerors destroyed it and so it was reconstructed several times. In 1963 a massive earthquake took place in Macedonia after which, the rectangular, circular and square towers were restored permanently.
Presently the Skopje Fortress "Kale" is considered to be one of the hottest destinations in Macedonia and without visiting it a trip to this country is indeed an incomplete one. From this old fortress a traveler can enjoy the scenic view of the Macedonian capital city of Skopje. Currently during the summer seasons several theatrical performances are seen to be held outside of this place.
