Lithuanian history dates back to 1009 AD. According to some scholars that was the time when mention of the Lithuanian people was made in an ancient Prussian manuscript called the Quedlinburg Chronicle.
Lithuania is situated in the European conquest and from the earliest times it was prone to military invasions by its Russian and Prussian neighbors. The different Lithuanian tribes formed a congregation in the Middle Ages to defend themselves. Lithuania and Poland were subsequently united under one ruler in the 12th century and formed one of the biggest empires in contemporary Europe. This continued for almost two centuries. Lithuania came under Russian rule following the partition of Poland in 1795.
Post World War 1 saw the disintegration of the Russian empire and Lithuania attained its independence under German control. The Soviet Union, invaded Lithuania in 1940. 1941 saw the occupation of Lithuania by German forces. Lithuania's independence was recognized in 1991 by Iceland.
