Geography of Lithuania



The geography of Lithuania is determined by its location, topographical features, climate, environment and natural resources. Lithuania is a small country located in Eastern Europe. Lithuania shares its borders with Russia and Latvia. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea on the eastern side. Lithuania covers a total land area of 65,000 square kilometers. The territorial borders of Lithuania have been altered several times following its independence from Russia. But some sort of stability has been achieved since the conclusion of the Second World War in 1945. The country of Latvia lies to the north of Lithuania. Their common borders stretch for about 453 kilometers. There is a 502 kilometers long border that the country shares with Belarus. The other border with Poland is comparatively small in length and is just about 91 kilometers long. This route, however, receives a perennial flow of international traffic movement. Lithuania shares a 227 kilometer long border with Russia. Lithuanian geography also include the topography of Lithuania which is characterized by a series of highlands and lowlands. The climate of Lithuania exhibits maritime and continental climatic influences.
