Local Transport Kiribati has enhanced the regional connectivity of this remote Pacific island. Buses and ships are probably the most preferred and convenient way of local communication in Kiribati. It is less expensive as well as most popular mode of public transport from the airport to the major centres on South Tarawa. Buses always remain available over here and from anywhere people can take a taxi and can get off in his desired destination. Buses runs on a daily basis from Betio to Buota. They usually start from 6.00am and operates till 9.00-10.00pm.

On the other hand, Ships operate from Betio, Tarawa to all the external islands carrying luggages, vehicles as well as passengers. Smaller liner of Canoe type also goes from Betio and Bairiki to North Tarawa and external islands. They are indeed one of the most used mode of Local Transport Kiribati.

Persons renting a car should be at least 17 years old. Drivers are advised to stick to the left side of the road and the speed limit should be kept within 45 kilometers per hour in towns and villages. The speed should not exceed 65 kilometers on the open highway. The rental cars available for hire in Kiribati include Small and medium sizes Japanese Toyota cars. Those cars should be booked at least 2 weeks in advance through the Kiribati Visitors Bureau.
