The people of Kiribati mostly live in villages with populations between 50 and 3,000 on the outer islands. Most houses are made of materials obtained from coconut. This is because of the fact that this place is a coastal region and coconut trees predominate over the other. Among the natural hazards drought is very common which hinders agriculture to a large scale. Dwellers here thus mostly confine themselves within the sea livelihood. Occupation includes sailing and fishing. Plantation of copra serve as a second source of employment. In recent years, large numbers of citizens have moved to the more urban island capital of Tarawa.
