The post of the Prime Minister Kenya is much debated. Jomo Kenyatta was the Prime Minister of Kenya from 1963 to 1964, but then he became the president in 1964. Recently many of the delegates are in favor of creating a post of Prime Minister in Kenya after the next scheduled election in 2007.
Jomo Kenyatta one of the great political figure & freedom fighter was the first Prime Minister of Kenya. During the state of emergency 1960-1961 both the political parties KANU & KADU demanded his release. He was elected as the President of KANU on 14th May, 1961. Finally he was released on 21st Aug, 1961.
After Kenya became independent KANU won the election & Kenyatta became the Prime Minister of Kenya. He is known as mzee ( old man or elder in Swahili.) to the people. In 1964 Kenya became republic and from Prime Minister he became the President of Kenya.
Prime Minister of Kenya is a much debated issue in Kenya now a days. According to pre-election agreement between parties a Prime Minister of Kenya post should be allocated. The President should select a Prime Minister. Then he would select the Cabinet to run the government. But the president would remain the head of the armed force as per the rule of this new constitutional order.
However President Mwai Kibaki is headed with great political confrontation as he has rejected the proposal of Liberal Democratic Party that he should appoint Mr. Odinga as the Prime Minister of Kenya. According to him the existing political order of Kenya will remain unchanged. So the issue of Prime Minister in Kenya is not yet solved.
