Jordan Culture

Arab and Islamic elements are the base of the Culture of Jordan. Most of the Jordan inhabitants are of Arab descent especially the people of East Jordan. Small minorities of the country are of Armenians and Circassians origins. More than 90% of the total population is Sunni Muslim and nearly 5% are Christians. However it is very clear that the Culture of Jordan is predominantly Islamic in nature.

‘Arabic’ is the official language of the country. English is the other language that is widely used for communicating with foreign countries.

Jordan Music is a notable aspect of the Culture of Jordan. This music has a unique characteristic that makes it different from the music of the other neighborhood countries. Jordan Music is highly influenced by the “Bedouin” tribes. One of the most popular music is the rural “Zazal” songs accompanied with improvised poetry. It is played with a “rabab” and “reed pipe”. Belly dancing is an integral part of the Culture of Jordan especially among the Bedouins.

Football and basketballs are widely played in Jordan. Another very popular sport in Jordan is the “camel race”.

Architecture is considered as the predominant visual art in Jordan. There are several fascinating mosques and ancient ruins that display the architectural excellence of Jordan Culture.

There are certain Cultural Values in Jordan. ‘Family’ is the base of society in Jordan. The Jordanians value their families and believe in extended families. They share a close relationship with the relatives and often live nearby.
